Ok obviously my friends there are #1. But besides that:
- Having really easy access to a path up Twin Peaks for an everyday-ish 1hr bike ride
- Or MacLaren Park for a little variety. But it’s hard to beat Twin Peaks.
- Having such great access to so many long bike rides! I became a Type of Guy who’ll be like “oh yeah I just went out for a ride” and when asked be like “yep it was 80 miles”. And the culture of so many people biking, it just became easy to meet a new friend and then go on a bike ride with them.
- The Mission, the most confounding and occasionally awful but mostly vibrant and diverse neighborhood I’ve ever lived in. Granted, sometimes it smells like pee, woe is me gentrification, it was better 10 years ago, your bike might get stolen, the rent is too damn high. But even so, what a place! It has most everything you’d need, it’s Actually Diverse, there’s always music and something artistic going on, every food and drink, and:
- Dolores Park, what a gem. Lively anytime, great place to meet anyone, a party on sunny weekends, a nice spot to watch the city even if it’s gray.
- MAPP, the Mission Arts and Performance Project, and stumbling into some guy’s workshop where he made the most amazing electronic gadgets that I’ve never seen again
- Bad Walgreens (at 23rd and Mission), ok I don’t miss it, but it’s an experience
- The theater scene! Going to a wide variety of plays at a dozen different theaters. Look at me being cultured.
- Every band on tour will stop by SF or Oakland.
- Riding into downtown with the rest of the commuters on Market st. I’m serious. It felt like we were Important and we were Part of Something.
- Relatedly: going out for drinks after work; there’s a feeling of aliveness. Again, being Important People. (hah! yes, capitalism is playing us. but it’s fun to play along.)
- My coworkers (at Stitch Fix and at internships) being generally really smart scientists
- The weather’s always perfect, of course
- Orange Sky Day was actually pretty cool, even though the rest of fire season was awful
- Rainbow Grocery
- Being 30 min from the airport by Bart
- Knowing what shops all the good dogs live at
- Ice cream, coffee, bread
- The tolerant attitude (and now/soon, laws?) towards psychedelics
- Being in a place that friends might just happen to visit, and being able to lend them a couch
- Marin county: weird, difficult, beautiful. I guess this includes Hawk Hill, which, it’s hard to find a better 2-3hr ride if you tried.
